Your role?

We are looking for a Paint & Roto Supervisor who reflects the innovative spirit, creative talent, production excellence, collaborative mindset and passion for great filmmaking that defines ILM.

The Supervisor’s primary responsibility is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the digital paint and roto team, ensuring that the painting of the shots is created according to the creative direction and visual style of the project. This will require partnering with other discipline supervisors and Production. Troubleshoots technical issues and provides recommendations. The Supervisor also delegates assignments and acts as the creative, technical, and morale lead for the digital paint team. This person provides constructive feedback on crew performance, makes recommendations and resolves issues. Mentoring of junior level and newly hired digital paint artists is a component of the position as well. The position also entails managing 3rd party vendors to ensure quality control and ensure that they have successfully been integrated into the working pipeline of the show. The supervisor also participates in interviews for new hires.

What will you be doing?

  • Works with Production to schedule work, and ensure that all targets are met; assigns work based on an evaluation of the team members’ skill sets. 

  • Actively works across departments in shot groups.

  • Provides updates to production and compositing team on shot progress and trouble-shoot where needed. 

  • Works with Production to determine which shots are suitable to send to Third Party Partners in different time zones, and gives direction to those partners on how to approach Roto/Paint tasks.

  • Gives artistic feedback to digital paint artists. 

  • Hits given notes, but is proactive in offering suggestions and alternate approaches.

  • Create generic scripts and templates to be used by other artists. 

  • Working on shots.

To be a contributing member of this team, you will have a mix of these skills:

  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience and a BA in Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, Design, or Photography, or related field; OR, an equivalent artistic background and experience. 

  • Minimum of 5 years production experience in computer graphics, animation or video.

  • Proficiency in softwares such as Commodore, Nuke and Silhouette. 

  • Excellent artistic eye, strong eye for color and grain structures with the ability to match saturation, hues and black points from multiple sources to create a cohesive final montage. 

  • Strong proficiency in “Paint on comp” work. 

  • Advanced skill at hand painting techniques. 

  • Ability to work with broad stroke notes and define looks for key events and shots. 

  • Able to handle complex shots with heavy motion blur, lots of layers, etc. 

  • Ability to use a combination of techniques when dealing with tricky wire removals and clean plates.

  • Technically proficient to perform all roto/paint tasks with proprietary and/or off-the-shelf software packages. 

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal). 

  • Strong interpersonal and organization skills. 

  • Willingness to learn new tools, proven ability to be detail oriented, possess problem solving skills.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and suggest effective approaches to tasks. 

  • Demonstrates a strong proficiency with 3D/Stereoscopic roto and paint work. 

  • Solid understanding of image pipeline from capture to delivery. Practical use of this knowledge to maintain the highest quality image possible. (i.e. concatenating transforms, color corrections, etc).
