Job Summary:

Junior Environment Artists are often paired with more senior artists from different departments to model, set dress, texture and look-develop published environments for use across the pipeline. Build on related concept art and photographic references to bring the concept to life. Partner with creative and technical departments to create stunning, photoreal environments for both film and episodic projects. They may also work on their own shots.

Junior Environment Artists demonstrate good skills in digital arts and abilities to work in a procedural workflow, as well as a developed eye for composition and photographic details. 

We are looking for a creative who reflects the innovative spirit, creative talent, production excellence, team-oriented mentality and passion for great filmmaking that define ILM.

What You’ll Do

  • Work on simple 3D environment shots, both photo realistic and stylized

  • Performing layout and set dressing of environments using 3D assets

  • Creation of simple individual assets including modelling, texturing, look dev, and publishing

  • Collaborate with different department specialists to ensure assets are working for the needs of the environment

  • Sourcing suitable reference materials for required assets

  • Work with the lighting department to ensure environments render efficiently and without errors

  • Responsible for presenting lit and shaded environments for feedback

  • Participate in team reviews of the work under development

  • Work under the direction of the lead and supervisor of the show

  • Encourage teamwork by sharing knowledge

  • Look for solutions that will give the fastest result with the best quality to achieve a desired look

  • Show regular progress to the lead and supervisor

  • Produce work within the production schedule

  • Communicate respectfully and effectively with the rest of the team

What We’re Looking For:

  • 1+ years related work experience (professional OR amateur) in one or more of the following fields: Computer Graphics, Fine Arts, Design or Photography OR related degree

  • Shown ability in multiple CG techniques, including modelling, texturing, look-development and lighting

  • Basic knowledge with procedural set dressing and scattering systems, including Layout

  • Basic knowledge with 3D organic and procedural asset creation (like vegetation or terrain)

  • Understanding of visual language - texture, colour, dimension, scale, perspective, lighting, shade, composition depth of field, proportion, etc.

  • Notion of the USD workflow

  • Basic knowledge of working with photogrammetry

  • Basic lighting skills

  • Exhibits teamwork and interdisciplinary thinking

  • Demo reel and shot breakdown (required)

  • Strong communication skills

  • Basic knowledge of the following software:

    • Photoshop

    • Houdini

    • Solaris

    • Katana with Renderman or similar renderer

    • Additional environment tools like Gaea, Speedtree, Zbrush, Substance Painter

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly

  • Being curious of new tools and technologies to improve efficiency

  • Eagerness for improvement, of attention to details and photo realism of your work

  • Desire to grow with the company

  • Nice to have: 

    • Feature film experience

    • Experience with scripting/automation

The hiring range for this position in Vancouver is C$57,800 to C$74,000 per year based on a 40-hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits, may be offered dependent on the level and position offered.
