Technical Production Supervisor

Job Summary:

Disney Cruise Line (DCL), a division of The Walt Disney Company, operates a six-ship fleet of premium class cruise liners and is the industry leader in family vacations at sea. DCL Entertainment (Toronto) is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company Canada, and serves as the rehearsal headquarters for DCL’s award-winning theatrical productions. Within a state-of-the-art entertainment rehearsal facility, DCL’s creative and production teams pride themselves on creating memorable family entertainment that is both enchanting and magical – delighting the young, and young at heart, with legendary Disney storytelling.

Based in Toronto, Ontario, and reporting to the DCL Production Manager, the Technical Production Supervisor works closely with DCL Creative and Production teams regarding technical needs and operation of our DCL Toronto rehearsal facility – including but not limited to our Walt Disney Theatre mainstage shows, Character operations and Shipwide entertainment offerings.  This role requires a close and positive partnership with the DCL Toronto creative and production team as well as with Shipboard and DCL Corporate Headquarter partners.  They will represent Disney Cruise Line Entertainment and the Walt Disney Company in Canada and globally, regularly interacting and supporting theatre professionals, performers, creative teams and DCL leadership.  

Responsibilities:

  • Operate as a technician in rehearsal and all training sessions
  • Support and partner with all Creative and Production teams
  • Technically Manages rehearsal rooms, offices, AV systems, common areas, and facility storage
  • Provides leadership, including training as directed for set-up, operation, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, documentation, and seamless operation of all DCL Toronto technical facilities
  • Meet required standards and have an excellent working knowledge of the rules and regulations applicable to their position
  • Maintain show integrity, conduct standards and quality of shore-side technical operations
  • Daily responsibility for installation, set-up, operation, testing, special effects and equipment at the Toronto rehearsal facility
  • Responsible for inspections and operation of stunt room equipment, including Spanish webs, Sway Pole, performer harness checks, flying hook-ups and automation operation during rehearsals
  • Responsible for overseeing that all rigging equipment is maintained in good order and being used properly
  • Attend to preventive maintenance and routine repair of all automation equipment and rigging systems, verifying all documentation is maintained and on file (epIQ/TAIT)
  • Attend to the preventative maintenance and routine repair of all facility props, costumes, puppets, sculpted and articulated character heads, set pieces, and technical equipment
  • Train all Performers and Creative/Production team members in the correct handling use, and care of technical equipment
  • Manage daily technical administration needs
  • Manage facility and team computer systems, wi-fi and Disney network interface
  • Maintain rehearsal stock documentation and provide vendor support as necessary
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness of all rehearsal facilities and related work areas
  • Print out a monthly maintenance routine at the beginning of each month; ensure that all maintenance routines are completed correctly and in a timely fashion
  • Before the end of the month, close all completed jobs within AMOS and see that the report is accurate and up to date
  • Provide feedback of equipment challenges and any issues relating to consumable items to verify good stock control
  • Discuss any potentially outstanding items with the DCL Production Manager so that an action plan can be formed and executed
  • Provide any required support for special events and the respective rehearsals
  • Occasional backup support for Production Supervisors when necessary for rehearsals
  • Occasional need to travel on a rehearsal crossover, production install, or based on shipboard technical support need
  • Partner with shipboard technical teams, and production teams as necessary 

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a technician, preferably for The Walt Disney Company, or a similar LIVE entertainment entity
  • Previous experience in a technical leadership role is strongly preferred
  • Experience with the operation of automated rigging systems, and the ability to trouble shoot and resolve challenges.
  • Certification and experience working at height using a scissor lift or AWP.
  • Experience operating audio systems, with the ability to trouble shoot and resolve challenges (AMX, QSC, etc.)
  • Experience in costume, prop, puppet and scenic maintenance
  • Must have knowledge of integrated video systems operations, with ability to solely maintain and operate
  • An understanding of Disney character brand usage and how it interfaces with the Disney Cruise Line repertory theatre operation is strongly preferred
  • An understanding of theatrical performing arts expectations within the cruise industry is strongly preferred
  • Must demonstrate a positive and solution-oriented approach to work
  • Strong communication, leadership and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to trouble shoot and thrive under tight timelines
  • Experience with collaboration and partnerships across various disciplines in a global business
  • Understands how to plan and strategize towards big picture objectives
  • Strong computer literacy (MS Office, Teams, Zoom)
  • Willingness & ability to travel to the U.S. and internationally, sometimes at short notice
  • Agreeable to all maritime sailing and seafarer guidelines, requirements and regulations, including sailing onboard the DCL ships statused as “crew" and assigned to the crew manifest
  • Able to work with a flexible and fluid production schedule including weekends and long days during busy periods. 

Education:

  • Post-Secondary education and/or equivalent training in technical theatre and LIVE entertainment events
