Position Summary
Look Development Supervisors work as hands-on collaborators with the VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor and other department Supervisors to ensure high-quality look development and shading is produced, while supporting the creative vision of the director.

What You’ll Do
- Design and create the lighting and the look of computer generated objects and scenes
- Works closely with other department Supervisors and CG Supervisors to determine the best approach to solving CG challenges and developing the final look
- In conjunction with the CG Supervisor, participate in the bidding process for new work on the show
- Work with CG Supervisor, Production Manager and Producers in crewing assignments to ensure the portfolio of work on shows and strategic projects is accomplished efficiently and to a high standard
- Work with the VFX and CG Supervisor to provide artistic and technical notes and direction to the team
- Create & maintain shading templates, and custom hero materials and shading networks, with proficiency
- Deep understanding of physically based rendering and shader models
- Ability to build and maintain complex shading networks with artist usability and user-interface support in mind
- Stay on top of pipeline iterations and improvements, make recommendations, and set priorities for show Pipeline TD
- Learn/develop new techniques quickly, and debug complicated problems
- Set a standard for all Technical Directors by continually improving the speed, quality of our work and adaptability.
- Proficiency in setting up custom light rigs and processing photogrammetry data, such as clear angle data, to create show-specific asset turntables that meet creative and technical requirements
- Develop small scale, show specific tools
What We’re Looking For
- Proven leadership experience in VFX and/or Feature Animation on multiple projects. 8+ years of industry experience in Look Development in VFX and/or Feature Animation
- Degree and/or professional training in Computer Graphics, with advanced work experience in VFX or Feature Animation
- Demo reel required; please include a breakdown of responsibilities for each shot in the reel in the edge of the frame
- Ability to work with competency, energy and enthusiasm within a team environment with minimal supervision
- Exhibits excellent listening and communication skills, able to receive direction and criticism
- Excellent presentation/communication skills in dailies/shot review by clearly and briefly outlining what has been accomplished by their crew
- Engage in the creative process without ego, and accepts all final decisions with a positive and supportive attitude
- Demonstrates an excellent aesthetic eye, anticipating potential problems and using knowledge of how to use the tools to achieve the desired look
- Demonstrates superb problem-solving skills and takes the initiative to offer ideas and suggestions
- Prioritizes tasks and manages time very well
- Linux and scripting ability in Python
- Advanced look development abilities
- Proven ability to pick up new software AND proprietary pipelines
- Knowledge of Katana and Renderman
The hiring range for this position in Vancouver is C$140,000 to C$179,200 per year based on a 40-hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits, may be offered dependent on the level and position offered.
